Did you know that flossing could be just as important to your dental health as brushing your teeth? This may be why our dentists here in Williamsburg and Norge, VA, always ask if you are flossing at home. Brushing your teeth is great for cleaning plaque from the chewing surfaces of your teeth, but plaque also likes to grow between your teeth in spaces where your brush can’t reach. Yet, if flossing is so key to your oral hygiene, how do you make sure you’re doing it correctly?

Flossing technique:
-Take a piece of floss that is about 18 inches long.
-Taking a small section, wrap the ends around your index fingers.
-Keep the floss taunt as you gently slide it between your teeth, starting in the back and working your way forward.
-When the floss touches your gums, gently move your hands in an up and down motion to clean the teeth. Before moving on to a new tooth, make sure you also move on to a new section of floss.
-Throw away the floss when you’ve finished. It is not reusable as floss becomes ineffective the second time around–especially after plaque gets on it.

There are different kinds of dental flosses available, and you can choose whichever suits your needs best. Regardless of whether you choose floss that is flavored or unflavored, waxed or unwaxed, you should make sure that it is verified to be effective and safe by the ADA.
