A common myth is that as a person gets older, they lose all their teeth. While that may have been true for some people in the past, there is no reason why you should have to face such a fate. With proper oral hygiene, you should be able to enjoy a healthy smile for your entire life, and our dental team here in Williamsburg, VA, is happy to give you the help you need.

However, as you age, there may be certain issues that you need to address. Dry mouth, a decay of the tooth roots, oral cancer, fungus and gum disease; and wear and tear on your teeth are all things of which older people should be aware.

You may want to talk with your dentist about increasing your intake of fluoride, and increasing or supplementing your saliva production. This may mean drinking more water, chewing sugarless gums, changing your medication, or using artificial saliva. If you use tobacco, it is time to quit. Tobacco increases your chances of gum disease and oral cancer and contributes to dry mouth. Continue to brush at least two times a day, and floss before bed. If you wear dentures, clean them every day, and soak them when you go to bed at night.

Just because you are in the second half of your life, that doesn’t mean that you don’t need to see the dentist. At every stage of life, your dental needs change, and your dentist may be the first one to spot changes in your teeth and mouth that need to be addressed.

If you live in the Williamsburg, VA, or the Norge, VA, area and have a concern about your mouth and teeth, or if it is just time for your regular cleaning and exam, then you should talk with our team of dentists.
